About Art
Reminiscent of Jack Vettrianos The Singing Butler, Dancing Butler on Toxic Beach Crude Oil is a bit of a departure from Banksys usual stark style. An obviously well-to-do couple dance as their butler holds an umbrella, even though there sky has only a few clouds. The beach is puddled, but the woman dances barefoot. In the middle distance, two hazardous materials workers are rolling an oil drum up the beach. In the far distance, close to the horizon, is cargo ship.
Crude oil has washed up on the beach after a spill, and the two men in yellow are cleaning it up. The couple dance on, oblivious to the oil underfoot. The woman is barefoot, suggesting she may be more vulnerable to crude. They are protected from the elements by their butler, who is a working man. They do not have to care. The worker cleans up and protects them.
