About Art
Location: Chicago, USA
The city of Chicago has a particularly hard line against graffiti. Their Graffiti Blasters are very diligent in eradicating street art from the citys subways, walls, and streets. Banksys Baby Carriage Rolling Down Stairs is a notable exception, however. This graffiti can be found in the West Loop stenciled on a building on the corner of Peoria and Randolph. It is reputedly the earliest known Banksy piece in Chicago.
On the side of this building are the visible remains of a stairway that once led to the second floor. Banksy painted the baby carriage as if it was rolling down these steps. From the position of the infants hands and the thrown bottle, the baby appears to be panicking. This is reminiscent of the movie The Untouchables, where a similar incident occurs during a gunfight. Nearly all Chicago residents who remember the mafia wars depicted in the film can relate to it. Like the title of this film, Banksys graffiti has remained untouched.”
The piece does not convey any perceptible meaning. The artist probably could not hold himself back from making the allusion to the mob movie when he saw the wall.
